Forget the climate, the culture – it was Snoopy and the Red Baron that brought the biggest ballooning event in the world to Albuquerque.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Festival this year draws hundreds of balloons and more than 100,000 visitors to town.

But if you could flash back to the spring of 1971, you’d see a very different Duke City. There were no hot-air balloons in Albuquerque and perhaps only 40 in the world. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the past few years, the vice president and the former attorney general have sought to expand executive power as much as possible in the name of protecting Americans from terror. But the temperamental conservative believes that power must always be clothed in constitutionalism. The dispositional conservative is often more interested in means than ends (the reverse of President Bush) and asks how power is divided before asking for what purpose it is used.

The Angriest Justice

Justice Clarence Thomas’s new autobiography dredges up his 16-year-old battle with Anita Hill and fulminates against liberal groups, Democratic senators and others who opposed his nomination. The clash with Ms. Hill has grabbed most of the headlines. But his fulminations deserve more attention. The rage he harbors raises questions about whether he can sit as an impartial judge in many of the cases the Supreme Court hears.

In a restaurant, the young waiter handed the woman — who appeared to be in her late 60s or early 70s — her check for the meal.

The woman — of the generation whose members were taught to be gracious to everyone, just because it makes the world nicer — said to the young waiter:

“Thank you.”

A Pool Full

A pretty callous remark, even though she’s making a serious point.

In Arizona, nothing says summer like a pool full of dead babies. Yet in 15 years, I know of only one parent prosecuted for negligence. We just call it a tragic accident and move on. Until the next one dies.
